These account for only 7% of the country’s land area, yet are home to 60% of its population. They are its economic powerhouse, producing 63% of GNP. They are also the seat of government. The rest of the islands, including such giants as Irian Jaya, Kalimatan, Sumatra and Sulawesi alongside a multitude of medium-sized and smaller islands, are referred to as the 9 AGRICULTURE IN CRISIS outer islands, which are much less developed. These fundamental inequalities in population densities and levels of development are a source of tensions that undermine the country’s unity—tensions that have often been exacerbated by the policy decisions of an authoritarian central government.

However, in Indonesia the rapid adjustments made in the rupiah prices of agricultural inputs and other goods used by farmers soon eroded this gain. The initial lack of change in Malaysian prices meant that INRO could not intervene in the market, as the prices in its reference currency did not fall into the “Amay-buy” zone. 00.
